What do you check before unlocking a shared bike in Riyadh?

The last bike felt fine at the rack and developed a soft rear tyre on the first hill. I carry no tools and do not want to fix someone else’s damaged chain. A minute at the rack feels cheap compared with walking a broken bike back.
